Previously a residence of Prince Soupha-Nouvong, Satri House is a unique and historic place to stay when visiting Luang Prabang; an oasis of royal grandeur in the heart of the city. Whilst it doesn’t boast all the ‘bells and whistles’ of some of the city’s other premium hotels, the Satri House (meaning ‘House of women’) brings a touch of class seldom found in newer developments. Unquestionably, this is a serious contender for Luang Prabang’s boutique hotel crown.

Oudomxay province is one of Laos’ most beautiful regions, offering a very welcome stopping point on a journey through the country’s north western quarter. Nestling beside a gently babbling river and completely surrounded by protected forest, the Nam Kat Yorla Pa is a tranquil base from which to explore this strikingly unspoilt area.

The resort’s overall feel is stylish yet uncomplicated, with wide windows which focus and frame the lush location and hills beyond. Traditionally-constructed wooden lodges, finished in the local style, perch within the landscape. Wooden terraces lead to secluded private pools, and the boundary between indoors and outdoors is softened by foldback glass doors extending the rooms onto verandas over the river.

On Don Daeng, between the banks of the Mekong River, you’d be forgiven for thinking you had pitched up on a remote Thai island rather than in land-locked Laos. That impression is mostly thanks to the deserted, sandy beach directly in front of the characterful La Folie. Facing Champasak, and just minutes by boat from the magnificent Wat Phou, La Folie is ideally located for exploring the region’s cultural sites when you’re not relaxing in castaway bliss.

The rooms at La Folie are simply and tastefully decorated using local materials, and feature private terraces with views over the Mekong or the hotel's tropical gardens. With a focus on sustainability at the fore, La Folie have taken great care to follow eco principles during the construction of the resort and, while this may have left it feeling a little too basic for some, we find it charmingly rustic (air-con in the rooms is an unexpected bonus). Arrive by boat, dip your toes into the swimming pool (the only one in the region) and enjoy fresh, locally-sourced food at the terrace restaurant.
